Albany Creek Swimming Club’s Samuel Short is fast building an impressive swimming CV — but what is not so obvious is the work he is putting in to achieve those milestones.

Short, 15, will enter the Queensland swimming championships starting on Sunday on the back of producing the fastest ever 800m and 1500m short course freestyle swims by a 14-year-old in Australia earlier in the year.

Previously the 1500m record was held by the decorated Mack Horton.

Short, a student at Prince of Peace Lutheran School at Everton Hills, also broke five Brisbane records, two Queensland records, two Queensland all-comers records earlier in the year.

You can also throw in two national records to his list of achievements.

Short’s coach at Albany Creek, Richard Sleight, said he was a “very talented young man’’ but critically also had a work ethic to match his ability.

“He has a phenomenal work ethic who is a great competitor and a fantastic racer,’’ Sleight said.

“He loves racing. You see many kids who are talented, but to maximise your potential, you have to have those traits.

“Sam and Rebecca (Jacobson, training partner), work hard and are good racers.’’

Out of the pool the respectful Short was also “a student of the sport’’.

“He is aware of the guys who have gone before him, the times swum by the big names,’’ Sleight said.

Sleight said Short had plotted out his aims for 2019.

“Sam world love to make the junior world team next year,’’ he said.

“Up to age 18 can qualify, so it will be tough to qualify, but it is a goal he is working toward.

“But is main goal is at the nationals where he wants to win as many events as he can.

“He would love to get on the podium again.’’
