Teen racking up medals eyes international hockey scene

At just 15, a gun hockey player reckoned she was ready to set some lofty goals.

A STRIVING goalie in the north of Brisbane is ready to take on the world.

Madyson Jones, 15, recently competed in the Queensland Under 15 hockey championships in Gladstone where her team won gold in the finals.

The teen said the event, which culminated in a shootout, encapsulated the pressure put on goalies.

“It was really nerve-racking, especially as a goal keeper,” she said.

“You are separated from your team and it is do or die.

“You just have to remind yourself to keep going.”

Madyson was also one of two Brisbane-based hockey players to be selected for the

Queensland Under 16 school girls hockey team, which won a silver medal at the National Championships held in Newcastle in August.

Madyson said she enjoyed the slightly under-the-radar nature of her chosen sport but wouldn’t mind giving it more exposure.

“It is a bit of a different sport so not many people know about hockey,” she said.

“But I like the skills it gives me.

“Especially as a goalie you need really fast decision making skills.

“So it is a different sport to play and a unique environment to play in.”

The passionate hockey player said she loved playing with “such wonderful players and coaches” and had high hopes for her progress.

“A lot of athletes dream of making it to the international stage,” Madyson said.

“It will be really tough but it is something that I want to do.

“I want to take it as far as I can and enjoy it as much as possible along the way.”
