Brothers from Brisbane’s north have been denied bail after police allege they broke into a Petrie home and viciously attacked its occupants with a hammer at the weekend.
Police will allege brothers Shane George Kemp, from Kallangur, and Brent Craig Kemp, from Mango Hill, broke into a home of one of the brother’s former partners at Petrie St at around 9pm on Sunday, January 31.
The Pine Rivers Magistrates Court heard Brent allegedly attacked the male occupant of the home with a hammer, while Shane allegedly restrained the female occupant to prevent her from interfering.
According to police, the woman broke free from Shane’s grasp and was subsequently allegedly assaulted by the pair.
Paramedics attended the scene and transported the alleged victims to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s hospital.
A spokeswoman from the QAS said the man suffered head and leg injuries, while the woman was treated for a neck injury.
Shane and Brent were each charged with one count of an act intended to cause grievous bodily harm or transmit disease, four counts of assault occasioning bodily harm while armed or in company, one count of common assault and one count of entering a dwelling with intent and in company.
Duty lawyer for the defence Fiona Graham of Fiona Graham & Associates told the court the brothers “strongly denied the charges”, “strongly denied using a weapon” and claimed they acted in self-defence.
Ms Graham told the court Brent was attacked first by the male alleged victim, who Brent claims struck him with a glass jar of Moccona Coffee.
The brothers told Ms Graham there was never a hammer involved and no such weapon has been found by police.
Magistrate Trevor Morgan said that wasn’t surprising, given the brothers were not arrested at the scene, nor at their homes.
Mr Morgan further questioned the self-defence claim, stating police alleged the brothers had followed the male alleged victim home after an altercation in a north Brisbane car park earlier that day.
“It appears on the material here that there is a strong case that applies to each of them, given the offence was witnessed (by other people),” he said.
Bail was denied for both brothers who will be held in custody until their next appearance at the Pine Rivers Magistrates Court on March 15.
