Mayor calls for parking review after community angered by townhouse approvals

Mayor calls for wider streets in new suburban developments after roads become choked with parked cars.

Concern Victoria is already 'too far gone' to halt the spread of COVID

GRIFFIN residents have had a win after the mayor of Moreton Bay today acknowledged parking had become a problem in the suburb.

Pine Rivers Press yesterday (July 29) published a story about the council’s policy of allowing new multi-dwelling developments to have just one parking space per unit, regardless of how many bedrooms it had.

Resident issued council fine warning over polite parking

Residents in Griffin were angered by a recent townhouse development approval at 287 Brays Rd for 11 units on a 1495 sqm block of land.

Each of the 11 three-bedroom units had just one parking space allocated, plus two visitor parking spaces on-site, and there was no space allocated on Brays Rd for overflow parking.

The council chose not to comment for that story, though after it was published Mayor Peter Flannery, who twice toured Griffin this month, acknowledged there was an issue with parking in the suburb.

He said councillors would request an immediate review of the current planning scheme provisions, calling for wider streets in new developments that allowed for on street parking.

“This is a family suburb and many families have more than one car, so logically you’d expect developers to lodge proposals that take this into account in their designs,” he said.

“My personal view is that car park ratios are too low and should be reviewed.

“I’m concerned that our current planning scheme provisions are not delivering acceptable standards and outcomes for residents in this area.

“Lifestyle is paramount in our region and key to that is good design.

“Certainly I wouldn’t expect to see any developer lodge an application that would put further parking pressures on Griffin’s streets.”

It was not clear whether any such review would extend further than Griffin, however, as many suburbs in Moreton Bay, particularly newer estates, had issues with parking.

North Lakes resident Steven Lovli recently was recently threatened with a council fine for “polite parking” at his Denham Crescent property.

Mr Lovli was parked partialy over the kerb because his street was too narrow to park in.

“If you park the way they want you to emergency vehicles wouldn’t be able to get through,” he told Pine Rivers Press.

“And even the rubbish trucks wouldn’t be able to get around, and they’re council-employed.

“How many people have just one car nowadays? Kids have got cars and they live at home so households can easily have three cars.”
