Multiple guns and fake passport unearthed during raid

A Brisbane retiree has faced court after being charged with illegally storing and possessing automatic pistols, rifles, gun magazines and false travel documents.

An Eight Mile Plains retiree has pleaded guilty to multiple weapons offences involving three handguns including a Smith & Wesson Magnum.

Ming-Fa Chen faced Holland Park Magistrates Court on eight charges including failing to safely store guns and gun magazines, unlawful possession of a Category B weapon (a Bushranger centre-fire rifle) and failing to report to Upper Mount Gravatt police.

A lawyer from the Commonwealth Department of Public Prosecutions, Michael Armstrong, also made an extremely rare appearance in the court, as Chen was charged with possessing a foreign travel document while knowing it was false.

Chen, who appeared to nod off while waiting to face Magistrate Sue Ganasan, pleaded guilty to all charges and will face sentence in Holland Park Magistrates Court on September 17.

Police prosecutor, Sgt David Low, told the court police attended Chen’s Eight Mile Plains home on July 8 and discovered the Magnum and Browning Buck Mark semiautomatic pistol and another handgun, as well as a magazine capable of taking more than 10 cartridges.

Sgt Low said the defendant was also detained at Brisbane International Airport on December 26, 2018, with a document which it is alleged he knew was a false travel document.

No other details were heard and Chen, who needed a Mandarin translator, was released on bail.
