LACE, mesh, feathers, bows and beads are scattered across Maree Starkey’s studio.

The Newport resident specialises in the unique craft of millinery, and says she transitioned from working in the bridal industry to designing and creating hats three years ago.

“A few friends and I were going to the races and I wanted to make a hat for myself and them,” Maree says. “I haven’t stopped since. I call it (hat making) my happy place.

“I am passionate about millinery because I see it as an art form where your imagination can go free and there are lots of new materials available now so the options are endless.”

Maree says fashionistas should be on the lookout for broadbrim hats and yellow tones for this year’s Melbourne Cup, on November 5, but notes a small statement headpiece never goes astray.

“Hats are gaining popularity lately and I think that’s due to the young royals,” she says.

“A hat, headpiece, large or small adds a finishing touch to an outfit and puts you one step ahead in the fashion stakes.”
