Moreton Bay Region Industry & Tourism (MBRIT) chief executive Shane Newcombe is excited his team has managed to fit so much into the weekend’s event.

“With the thousands of people who come from all across South East Queensland to Redcliffe and the Moreton Bay Region, we are all so happy that this year’s Redcliffe KiteFest has so many diverse and different activities on offer,” he says.

It wouldn’t be a KiteFest without some spectacular kite flying displays, right? This year, there will be four international and five domestic kite flyers travelling to the event, plus a whole sweep of brilliant kite flyers from Redcliffe Kite Club on the USC Kite Arena showing off their skills.

Moreton Bay Regional Councillor Koliana Winchester (Div 6) encouraged local families to bring a kite and join in the fun.

“Have a go at flying your own kite high in the sky in the USC public kite flying zone,” she says.

“It’s the ultimate kids’ weekend, with a range of low-cost activities and entertainment, all full of fun and colour.”

In between the stage shows, stunts and extraordinary kite flying, there will be hundreds of market stalls to keep you busy, from shopping for that perfect gift to sampling delicious food.

Thanks to Kindred, one lucky person has the chance to win the Redcliffe KiteFest Golden Ticket which includes a meet and greet with Baby Shark backstage, all-day ride passes and food vouchers worth $50. To enter, simply buy your tickets online before June 3.

WELCOME TO THE WHALES

How do you greet 25,000 of the ocean’s largest mammals as they enter the waters of Moreton Bay? You throw a welcome party and invite the whole community, to make them feel welcome.

Organisers are promising festival-goers a “whale of a time”, thanks to the addition of the Welcome to the Whales event to the exciting Redcliffe KiteFest program.

Between June and November each year, more than 25,000 humpback whales will make their way through Moreton Bay’s waters on their annual migration.

To officially welcome the whales back to our waters, Redcliffe KiteFest is inviting everyone to join the welcome party and celebrate the launch of the whale watching season from 10am until 2pm each day.

Families will step onto the beach and into a “whaley good time” to welcome and pay tribute to the ocean’s largest mammals, explains Moreton Bay Region Industry & Tourism’s chief executive Shane Newcombe.

“Not only will this brand-new addition be a whole lot of fun for families, it will also be an educational experience,” he says.

“The whole family will love learning about marine life, thanks to touch tanks and virtual reality, as well as environmental talks throughout the day from our good friends at Brisbane Whale Watching, Australian Coastal Protection Core and Sea Shephard.”

The program will also feature Welcome to Country, which includes a smoking ceremony and dance performance by indigenous elders as well as a whale wishes ceremony warmly welcoming the whales back to the bay.

“Held on the beach, the whale wishes ceremony will be at 12.30pm daily with festival-goers invited to join in the celebrations and pay tribute to these majestic mammals, by placing a white pebble on the giant sand whale sculpture that will be carefully crafted during the morning,” he says.

Moreton Bay Regional Councillor Koliana Winchester (Div 6) says Welcome to the Whales joins an extensive list of free and low-cost activities that are included in the entry ticket to the Redcliffe KiteFest.

“The marine life theme continues throughout the extended Redcliffe KiteFest program, with everyone’s favourite YouTube sensation Baby Shark performing twice daily on the Kindred Main Stage,” she said.

“Redcliffe KiteFest also boasts a program of international kite flyers that will show off their masterpieces in the sky, alongside an array of activities and workshops throughout the weekend.

“If you’ve never been before it’s truly a sight to behold and if you have been, you know this is an event not to be missed.”

Welcome to the Whales is proudly delivered by Moreton Bay Region Industry & Tourism in partnership with Moreton Bay Regional Council and is made possible thanks to funding received from Advance Queensland.
