AFTER travelling more than 230,000km and visiting 70 nations and territories, the Queen’s Baton Relay, and all the fanfare that comes with it, will arrive at Suttons Beach for the Redcliffe Festival of Sails on March 30.

The tradition, which celebrates the diversity of the Commonwealth Games and community pride, will add to an already packed program of entertainment at one of South East Queensland’s largest Good Friday events.

Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism (MBRIT) chief executive Shane Newcombe says the entire region will be excited to welcome the Queen’s Baton Relay.

“We are very honoured that Redcliffe was chosen as a celebration community. The relay will travel along Redcliffe Pde from 8.30am and be welcomed to the Redcliffe Festival of Sails main stage at 8.54am with daytime fireworks and live performances,” Shane explains.

The relay is travelling around Australia before heading to the 2018 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony on April 14.

“Seven local legends will share in carrying the Queen’s Baton along its Redcliffe Route, with our very own sporting hero Lakeisha Patterson presenting it at the Festival of Sails main stage,” Shane says.

Redcliffe Festival of Sails is one of the region’s largest annual events, coinciding with the Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race, which celebrates its 70th year in 2018.

The festival is free to attend and will host plenty of fun from 8am-4pm. Guests of all ages can enjoy three stages of entertainment, rides, giant art cube, beach games, sand sculpting workshops and demonstrations, an Easter egg hunt, and the famous skydiving Easter bunny.

Sweet tooths will fall in love with the new pop-up ice cream fair offering gourmet treats, or they can browse through more than 150 market stalls.

A free shuttle bus service will run from 7am- 5pm between Redcliffe Showground, where free parking is available, Kippa Ring Station and Suttons Beach.

The Redcliffe Festival of Sails is proudly brought to you by MBRIT, and supported by Moreton Bay Regional Council.
