LIVING by the water is a dream come true for many in the Moreton Bay Region, and a select few even get to lap up the big blue as their office view.

These businesses on the water provide tourists and locals with the chance to enjoy new experiences, including fishing, island cruises and barbecuing on a boat they’re skippering themselves.

Dolphin Wild Island Cruises

Thirty years in the marine eco-tour business has put Dolphin Wild on the map as the perfect cruise to experience the marine life of Moreton Bay. Departing from Newport, Brisbane and Tangalooma, cruises feature expert marine commentary and take you to the best spots for animal encounters.

All ages are welcome on board to join in the fun of spotting bottlenose dolphins, dugongs, green sea turtles and humpback whales swimming around Moreton Island.

Dolphin Wild’s Supercat boat allows you to get up close and personal with the animals from its three large viewing decks as they put on a show. If you’re after something more adventurous, you can snorkel among the wrecks as part of the Tangalooma cruise. Owner Lisa Edwards will take you on a journey you’ll never forget with cruises starting at $85 for children and $135 for adults. Visit dolphinwild.com.au

Ferryman Cruises

This long-running business offers eco nature cruises which take you along Bribie Island’s picturesque Pumicestone Passage.

All ages can enjoy this adventure as Erin and Andrew MacKay take you on a smooth and relaxing ride featuring stunning views of the Glasshouse Mountains.

Erin says the cruises are ideal for any nature, boating or outdoor enthusiast.

“Sticking to the calm water of the Pumicestone Passage, we travel north towards the Glasshouse Mountains,” she says.

“We take in the mainland Australia side on the way up, and on the way back we cruise the Bribie Island side.” Cruises run five days a week with the option of a morning tea or lunch cruise. Trips start at $19 for children and $39 for adults, with discounts offered for seniors and large groups. Visit ferryman.com.au

Fishing Buddy

Hosting fishing birthday parties for his children and their friends inspired Tristan Cosman-Jones to launch his business Fishing Buddy. That was about five years ago and since then he’s been able to teach beginners the basics and help them develop a love for the pastime that’s been his lifelong passion.

“I supply everything — the equipment and bait — and spend an hour or two with them, helping them,” Tristan explains.

While he can’t guarantee a catch, he does plan the trip to maximise the chances of catching fish considering weather, tides and other conditions. Tristan says the best thing is families don’t have to spend money on buying the wrong gear. He mostly meets customers at Dohles Rocks, Woody Point Jetty and at Scarborough, sometimes heading to Bribie.

Sessions cost $40 for one hour’s fishing with two children. Tristan is also happy to help larger groups. Visit fishingbuddy.com.au
