COMBINING a coffee roasting cafe with modern Asian cuisine has been a leap of faith for James Kyung Je, and patrons have embraced the idea with enthusiasm.
Blaktan Coffee Bar and Kitchen opened in December and word is spreading about the restaurant’s fine food and great coffee.
James, who is from South Korea, says the licenced restaurant is now booked out most Friday and Saturday nights.
“After four weeks, we had lots of good reviews on our Facebook page and we’re now busy,” he says.
James is the coffee roaster and barista, while chef Bo Moon creates the magic in the kitchen.
He too is from South Korea and worked in a five-star hotel for 10 years and the popular Spice Bar at Mooloolaba before coming to Blaktan.
James says he shares Bo’s vision and believes this style of Asian fusion will work well in North Lakes because there are few fine dining options for Asian cuisine.
He says meals are beautifully presented, offer diners a range of flavours to experience and use all fresh ingredients. Even the Gyoza is made on site.
James says their whole barramundi with lemongrass sauce and sauteed Asian vegetables is popular, as is the Korean-style braised pork belly with gochujang aioli.
Blaktan Coffee Bar and Kitchen serves traditional breakfasts, but also offers options with Asian flair including eggs benedict with Japanese-style torched salmon or braised pork belly. The menu is updated monthly, reflecting customer feedback.
The venue’s name was inspired by James and wife Jamie’s rottweiler, Mango.
The colour scheme has been used in the fit-out and Mango’s face is featured on the restaurant’s logo.
“The rottweiler is a beautiful animal with a beautiful colour combination – black and tan. They are loyal and smart,” he says.
