Young tradie smashed the drinks, and then a car, during a wild night out at Eatons Hill

The 20-year-old was just ‘stupid and drunk’ when he randomly decided to smash in a stranger’s car.

Australia's Court System

A pissed pub-goer got so wasted at the weekend he didn’t remember stumbling into a 7 Eleven car park and using his elbow to violently smash in the rear window of a random car, the Pine Rivers Magistrates Court heard on Friday.

Bailey Aiden Wilkes, 20, wondered why his arm hurt when he woke up at home on the morning of August 23, but figured he must have fallen on it while drinking at the Eatons Hill Hotel the night before.

CCTV footage, however, showed another story.

Video obtained from the 7 Eleven on Bunya Park Dr shows a “highly intoxicated” Wilkes approaching the back of the car and using his right elbow to strike the windscreen, destroying and shattering the glass, before leaving on foot.

Police compared the footage with CCTV captured by security at the Eatons Hill Hotel and used it to successfully identify Wilkes.

The court heard that, when confronted by police, Wilkes confirmed the person caught on camera was him but said he’d been so drunk he had no recollection of doing it.

Wilkes pleaded guilty to one charge of wilful damage.

Lawyer for the defence Steven Brough of Clarity Law told the court Wilkes did not have anger management issues - Rather, he was simply “stupid and drunk”.

“It’s the binge drinking culture, unfortunately,” he said.

Mr Brough said the incident had been something of a wake-up call for his client, who had since sought therapy to help with his drinking problem.

Magistrate Melanie Ho sentenced Wilkes to a 12 month $500 good behaviour bond and ordered him to pay the car owner $413 in restitution.

No conviction was recorded.
