A Moreton Bay father-of-five has been slammed by a judge for cooking meth with his young child in the home.

A Moreton Bay man who set up a home laboratory to cook methamphetamine to feed his addiction has been slammed for doing it while living with his three-year-old child.

Griffin man Troy Gunn, 39, pleaded guilty in Brisbane Supreme Court on Monday to four drug-related offences.

They included two counts of possessing a commercial quantity of meth and one count each of possessing a dangerous drug and possessing things used in the commission of crime.

The court heard the offending was discovered after the execution of a search warrant on July 22 last year at Gunn’s former Burpengary residence he shared with his partner and their young child.

Gunn told police they would discover steroids and syringes in his bedroom but that admission barely scratched the surface of what cops found.

Police discovered two quantities of methamphetamine, one in crystal form and the other liquid, totalling more than 5g pure meth, within 19g of substance.

They also uncovered a variety of chemicals and glassware used to cook meth, including 20 packets of medicine containing pseudoephedrine, a gas can, a variety of precursor chemicals, digital scales and other drug paraphernalia.

The court accepted the meth-cooking operation was for Gunn’s personal use.

It was also told Gunn had a five-page criminal history featuring offences of violence and for which he had previously spent actual time in custody.

Defence counsel Joshua Fenton said his client was schooled to Year 10 at Beerwah and was a house painter until age 33, when he became a roofer, the industry in which he is currently employed.

He said his client was a father-of-five whose children ranged between 19 and three years’ old.

Justice Peter Callaghan was unimpressed that Gunn cooked up in the same home as his youngest child.

“It’s lunacy, it’s dangerous, it’s contemptuous of his own flesh and blood,” Justice Callaghan said.

“No father who loves his child could put them in that position.”

Justice Callaghan described it as a “lethal cocktail” having a defendant with prior convictions for violence now coming before the court using methamphetamine.

He sentenced Gunn to two years’ imprisonment with immediate court-ordered parole and ordered he perform 240 hours of community service.
