Tributes flow for 16-year-old teenage boy killed in a crash at the Queensland Dirt and Long Track titles

A Gold Coast motorcycle club has paid tribute to Anthony ‘Knuckles’ Gordon, the 16-year-old killed at the Queensland Dirt and Long Track Titles. It comes as fundraising starts for the teenager's family.

The talented teenage boy who died after a tragic crash at the Queensland Dirt and Long Track Titles yesterday has been identified as a talented Gold Coast racer Anthony Gordon.

It is believed the boy was racing a dirt bike at a track on Raubers Rd at the Mick Doohan Raceway at Banyo in Brisbane’s north, when he struck a fence about 1.45pm on Monday.

Paramedics and the High Acuity Response Unit treated the boy, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Friends and family have taken to social media to pay their respects and share touching tributes to the 16-year-old, also known as ‘Knuckles’.

Anthony, a student at Nerang State High School, is being remembered as a talented racer and all around wonderful person.

The Gold Coast’s Mike Hatcher Junior Motorcycle Club said it had lost one of its ‘family’.

“Anthony “Knuckles” Gordon #585 was doing what he loved most, competing in the 2021 QLD Titles, when tragedy struck and Knuckles was involved in an accident,” the club posted on its Facebook page.

“Although paramedics worked hard and did everything they could, they could not save our friend.

“On behalf of all the MHJMCC we would like to pass on our sincere and heartfelt condolences to (Anthony’s family) in this tragic, unthinkable time. We are, and always will be here for you.

The club appealed for members and supporters to support a GoFundMe campaign launched to help Anthony’s family pay his funeral costs.

Nerang State High said the family had asked it not to provide media comment on the tragedy.

Motorcycling Queensland, the state controlling body for motorcyle sport and recation in Queensland said it “is deeply saddened by a fatality that occurred at yesterday’s Queensland Dirt Track Championship event, Banyo.”

A spokeswoman said: “As a close and supportive community, the motorcycle racing family has been deeply affected by this accident, and we are currently supporting each other in every way possible to ensure that everyone gets through this tragic event.”

“Motorcycling Queensland will assist the Queensland Police with their investigations.

“We are currently investigating support services and we hope to make an announcement about this soon.

“Our love and thoughts are with the rider’s family at this time.”

Anthony’s best friend Seth Qualischefski shared a moving tribute on Instagram.

“Today I lost my best mate my brother Anthony to a racing incident at the 2021 QLD Championships Anthony was always around me and my family and we loved every second we could spare together,” Seth wrote.

“All the memories I had with you are unforgettable and I’m lost for words and I still can’t believe that you’ve moved on to a better place looking down on me.

“You are my brother and I can’t believe I’ll never get to share a track with you again.

“You are so special to me knuckle head and I wish there was something I could’ve done to help.

“Your soul will live on forever and you’ll be in my heart forever mate and I’ll be looking up at you every night.

“Rest easy my brother and I’ll see you up there one day I love you mate.”

Tamzin Bowden wrote: “It was absolutely heartbreaking, we lost a beautiful young man today. An extremely talented racer. May he RIP.”

Fellow racer Emma Scott wrote: “Fly high angel, you are missed by many”.

Kelvin Grills said: “You are a champ knuckles. Make sure your full pined on the way through the gate to heaven mate.”

“I love you, you’ll forever be missed. You were an amazing racer,” wrote Gabrielle Furminger.

Sharon Coglan shared: “Fly high young man. Condolences to the nicest family I have meet, just heartbreaking”.

Queensland Police Forensic Crash Unit investigators are investigating the incident.

Police are appealing for spectators at the event who were filming the race to come forward and supply vision to Forensic Crash Unit investigators.

Queensland police Inspector Laurie Shevlin said: “Today is a tragic day, for any parent that has been to this track, or any parent whose children compete in this sport, this is their worst nightmare.

“One of the riders had an accident during the event, has come off his bike, and has unfortunately died.

“This is a tragic incident that no could have foreseen.

“There is now one family here dealing with a terrible, tragic loss.

“The family is not doing well, from all accounts this boy was a lovely young man, promising dirt bike rider and to have his life cut tragically short like this is just, unspeakable.”

Police confirmed the event was held on Monday after it was postponed on Sunday due to wet weather and the investigation would consider, among other factors, if conditions contributed to the crash.
