Three people including toddler and infant hit by car on Bribie Island

Witnesses have recalled the terrifying moment a baby, toddler and woman were struck by a ute driven by a 95-year-old man on Bribie Island.

Baby flung from pouch in Bribie crash

A baby boy was flung from his carrier and on to the road after he, a four-year-old girl and woman were hit by a vehicle on Bribie Island on Monday.

They were crossing at traffic lights on Goodwin Drive, Bongaroo, outside the Bribie Island Shopping when they were struck by a Holden Rodeo about 11.50am driven by a 95-year-old man.

Angela Degaetano from the Goodwin Drive Family Medical Centre watched it unfold and along with two doctors and a nurse raced to help the trio.

Ms Degaetano said a witness reported seeing the baby boy flung from a baby carrier harness onto the road, smacking the back of his head.

“He was awake, his eyes were open, he was breathing okay but he was very limp and not responsive,” Ms Degaetano said.

“Mum was severely injured, she wasn’t able to stand up and weightbear.

“She’s potentially got a fracture of some sort in her leg or hip.

“She had lacerations to her face.

“She asked me if she was dreaming and I said ‘it’s real you’re not dreaming’.”

“She thought she had lost a tooth but her tooth had gone into her top lip.

“The little girl had a rather large bruise on the back of her arm and lacerations to her face.”

The four-year-old girl and a six-month-old boy were taken to Queensland Children’s Hospital in a serious condition.

The woman, aged in her 30s, was taken to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a stable condition.

Ms Degaetano said the community would be shocked by this incident, adding the traffic lights have only recently been installed.

“As I walked to the scene and crossed paths with the receptionist in that practice there, she said to me she didn’t know if the baby was alive,” Ms Degaetano said.

“He was alive but you knew it wasn’t normal, he was just so very limp.

“About 15 minutes later he was crying and more normal.

“Then the little girl went downhill a bit more, she got sleepy – potentially a concussion.

“There were two people who witnessed it that I’m aware of and one of them said he thought the lights were at fault.

“The other lady saw the baby physically come out of the pouch.”

The 95-year-old driver of the vehicle was taken to the Caboolture Hospital in a stable condition, as a precaution.

QAS officer in charge Jarred Thorne said a total of eight ambulance units, including critical care and high acuity paramedics, attended the scene.

Motorists were asked to avoid the area, with Goodwin Drive between Bongaree Ave and Hornsby Road closed for several hours.

Parents hoping to collect their children from Bribie Island State School have been told to prepare for delays this afternoon.

“We have just been notified by emergency services that there has been an accident on Goodwin Drive outside the shopping centre,” the school wrote on social media.

“There is a high chance this road will still be closed at 3pm. Please keep this in mind for 3pm pick-up.”

The school said they would advise parents if the school’s bus routes would be impacted.

A tow truck had arrived on scene just before 2pm to remove a Holden Rodeo understood to be involved in the incident.

Traffic through the Goodwin Drive roundabout in front of the shopping centre was flowing by 1.50pm, being co-ordinated by police officers.
