Thieves target luxury cars and appliances in Newport crime spree

Several luxury cars, televisions, kitchen appliances and more were all stolen from homes within a few streets of each other in the past week prompting police to set up mobile CCTV cameras.

Audis, televisions, dishwashers, cooktops and much more were all stolen from Newport homes this past week.

Acting Senior Sergeant Officer-in-Charge of Redcliffe Police Aaron Firth said he had lodged an application with Moreton Bay Regional Council asking for several mobile CCTV cameras to be set up in the most vulnerable areas.

“The thieves are targeting homes under construction and stealing appliances, fittings and tools,” Sen Sgt Firth said.

It is not the first time thieves have targeted the Newport area.

“We are getting good results solving them by using CCTV footage from council and neighbours,” Sen Sgt Firth said.

“But we have approached council as well asking for more mobile CCTV cameras in the area.”

Sen Sgt Firth said opportunistic thieves had also helped themselves to several luxury cars, wallets and other items in Newport.

He reminded residents to keep their homes secure at all times and to keep valuable items and keys out of sight.

Crime break down

Between 11.30pm on May 15 and 4.30am on May 16 a 2011 silver Audi A6-4F sedan, registration 199 WZI, and a red 2017 Audi S5, registration ASM005 were stolen from a home at Spinnaker Boulevard, Newport. Police say the thieves gained entry through a fence which was propped open and an unlocked rear door. The thieves also got away with various keys and a men’s wallet. Investigations are continuing.

At about 2.45am on May 16 a blue 2006 Volkswagen Jetta, registration 832YSZ, was stolen from a home at Aurora Place, Newport. Police believe the offenders gained entry through a rear door. The car was later found, with the keys in it at Lakeview Promenade, Newport.

Between 4am and 8am on May 16 a wallet and purse were stolen from a home on Tasmania Ave, Newport. A fly screen was found forced open. Two boys, one in a white hoodie and another in a black hoodie, both wearing balaclavas were seen outside the address at 12.15am.

Two men allegedly attempted to break into a home through an open side gate at about 3am on May 16. A barking dog alerted the residents and the offenders fled in a stolen white Subaru Forester. The stolen car was later found in Aurora Court, Newport.

A dishwasher, cooktop, microwave, toilet pan, seat and vanity basin were stolen from a property at Quay Circuit, Newport, between 3pm on May 14 and 1pm on May 15.

Between 5pm on May 15 and 10am on May 16 a television, bed sheets, two bedside drawers and a lamp were stolen from a home at Smith Lane, Newport.

Registration plate 973 VXU was unscrewed from a car parked at Australia Court, Newport, between 8pm on May 10 and 6pm on May 11.
