The Redcliffe Drop-in Centre group has collapsed along with plans to build a safe space for the homeless

A group which has been working for five years to establish a much needed homeless drop-in centre north of Brisbane has disbanded — despite the community raising close to $70,000 for the cause.

The Redcliffe Drop-in Centre, originally called Club 189, was formed with the aim of establishing a safe place for the region’s homeless.

According to data collected by the Australian Bureau of Statistics the number of homeless people in Moreton Bay has risen from 740 in 2011 to 1166 in 2016.

Redcliffe residents helped raise about $67,000 for the project through the first three Rockin’ 4 the Homeless events.

The issue has been compounded by Moreton Bay Regional Council cracking down on people sleeping in their cars at public parks — with rangers even issuing fines.

The Moreton Bay Regional Council had earmarked a site near the Redcliffe Showground for the centre to be built but Redcliffe Drop-in Centre was not able to come to any agreement with surrounding stakeholders.

This lead the council to withdraw its in-kind support in November last year.

In May the group said it did not have an update to share.

Group association secretary Christine Standfast and treasurer Begzada Bolic sent a letter to the Redcliffe Herald on Thursday night.

It reads:

On the 22 January 2019 the Management Committee (‘Committee’) of the Redcliffe Drop-In

Centre Inc met and resolved to wind up the organisation.

The winding up of the Redcliffe Drop-In Centre has been executed in compliance with its

Constitution. Part of the winding up process involves the mechanism for the distribution of

surplus assets (a) having objects similar to the association’s objects; and (b) the rules of

which prohibit the distribution of the entity’s income and assets to its members.

The Committee discussed Redcliffe Drop-In Centre’s history and with the view to continuing

a collaborative, professional and amicable community sector within the Redcliffe District. A

decision was reached that the founding three organisations (being The Breakfast Club,

Chameleon House and Redcliffe Area Youth Space), be beneficiary of an equal share of the

assets held by our organisation. All three organisations provide services in the homeless and

disadvantaged sector, in line with the Redcliffe Drop-in Centre’s purpose.

The group is yet to respond to questions about how much of the money raised still remains.

The Breakfast Club of Redcliffe offers free breakfast and dinner to those living on the street as well as offering access to support services and emergency food packs through its new Hub facility.

It is the current beneficiary of the Rockin 4 the Homeless event.
