The 18-year-old Beachmere man who was allegedly driving the 4WD that rolled, killing another 18-year-old man, on a Bribie Island beach yesterday has been released from hospital.

The driver, who cannot be named for legal reasons and Harrison Payne both graduated from St Eugene College, at Burpengary, last year.

Police say Mr Payne was the passenger in a Toyota HiLux ute which rolled on Ocean Beach, Woorim, at about 4.30pm on Sunday.

Initial police investigations indicate the alleged driver, a P-plater driver from Beachmere, lost control of the car before the crash.

Mr Payne was pronounced dead at the scene while the driver was flown to Princess Alexandra Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

A Metro South Hospital and Health Services spokeswoman confirmed the driver had been discharged from hospital on Monday – she was not able to provide details on the extent of his injuries.

Officer-in-charge of the Burpengary Forensic Crash Unit Sergeant Greg Price said the matter was being treated as a criminal investigation.

Sgt Price said police were investigating the manner of driving in the moments before the crash, how and why the car rolled and how the passenger was ejected.

“We suspect he wasn’t wearing a seatbelt,” Sgt Price said.

Police believe the alleged driver and Mr Payne were driving along the beach as part of a group.

“We have a lot of eye witnesses to talk to and dashcam footage to look at,” Sgt Price said.

At this stage no charges have been laid.

Mr Payne has been remembered as an “amazing young man” with “so much to live for”.

Anyone with dashcam footage relevant to the incident has been asked to contact police on 131 444.

Police are continuing to investigate.
