THE Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) has refused to elaborate on misconduct charges imposed on a mayor north of Brisbane.

Last month, the CCC arrested Moreton Bay mayor Allan Sutherland and transported him to Fortitude Valley Police Station where he was formally charged with two counts of misconduct in relation to public office.

When pushed for detail on the charges, the CCC declined to comment.

However, when the CCC charged Moreton Bay Division 12 councillor Adrian Raedel with official corruption last June, the CCC explained what the charges were in relation to.

“It will be alleged the man, a current councillor, corruptly received benefits including a sum of money, pre-paid travel, accommodation and advertising,” a statement from the CCC said in relation to Cr Raedel.

There was no such comment in relation to Cr Sutherland’s arrest, other than to say “a 63-year-old man from Newport” was arrested.

Cr Sutherland was bailed and is expected to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court next Wednesday, February 5.

It is understood that at least one of the charges relates to a property Cr Sutherland owns at Paradise Rd, Burpengary.

Cr Sutherland said in a statement that he would fight the charges.

Cr Raedel, who said he too would fight the charges against him, had his case mentioned in court on August 19, 2019, and was it expected to be mentioned again on October 14 this year.

The CCC has been widely praised for its efforts in cleaning up local government in Queensland.

Its investigations into local government over the past two years have led to the arrests of several high profile figures including the mayors of Ipswich, Logan and Fraser Coast, and now Moreton Bay.
