A teenager who tried to rev his car engine at a woman outside a pub but instead mowed her down has faced court for the near-fatal mistake.
Mathew Thomas Nugent, 19, was in his car outside the Narangba Valley Tavern on September 11 when he tried to rev his car engine at a woman, Caboolture Magistrates Court heard.
However the court heard Nugent, a fencer from Narangba, forgot to put the car in neutral and instead ploughed the woman down.
She fell backwards with such force she suffered a brain injury which required emergency surgery, where part of her skull had to be removed to treat a bleed on the brain.
The court heard Nugent — who had fetal alcohol syndrome — thought he was parked on top of the woman and so reversed and ran over her legs.
Magistrate James Blanch heard Nugent was told to leave the scene for his own safety and because he was getting in the way.
He pleaded guilty to one count of driving without due care and attention or driving without reasonable consideration for other persons causing grievous bodily harm.
“You’re lucky she seems to have recovered fully,” Magistrate Blanch said.
Nugent was fined $2000 and disqualified from driving for nine months.
