University of Sunshine Coast’s Dr Carol Smith, who is the Program co-ordinator for Master of Teaching (Primary), said it was important to remember “class size is one of many variables” that can contribute to a student’s academic success.

“Research shows and from my own experience that (class size) is just one factor,” Dr Smith said.

“Other factors can be firstly who the student is themselves and their academic strengths, home factors, the resources available in the school, school culture, philosophies in the school and the biggest thing in all of this is the teacher.

She said the teacher had to be able to engage with the students, in either a big or small class.

Dr Smith said there was some research that suggested students in the early years and those with special needs benefited from smaller class sizes.

“It is about the student teacher connection. The teacher is more able to give instruction and monitor the progress and provide feedback with small numbers,” she said.

According to ACARA the national student-teacher ratio was 13.5 students for every teacher.

Across the country independent private schools had the lowest student to teacher ratios with 11.7 students to every teacher.

Government schools had an average of 13.8 students for every teacher while Catholic schools

had an average of 14 students for every teacher.

Student-teacher ratios do not take into account teacher aides or non-teaching staff at schools,

only the full-time equivalent teachers.
