Premier Steven Miles has pledged to end years of arguments and promises and build a traffic-busting second bridge at Bribie Island.

Mr Miles made the announcement this morning, July 2, on social media.

He said that a re-elected State Labor Government would build a new crossing to complement the existing bridge.

It would be fully funded by the Queensland Government at an estimated cost of $200 million, according to former Transport Minister Mark Bailey in 2020.

The new link will have two eastbound traffic lanes and a dedicated active transport path for bicycle riders, pedestrians and users of mobility devices.

The concept design proposed to turn the existing bridge into two westbound traffic lanes.

Labor released concept plans for the new bridge in January.

The new bridge would alleviate regular, huge traffic jams in and out of Bribie Island.

“Moreton Bay is one of our fastest growing regions and we’re delivering the infrastructure locals need,’’ Mr Miles said on his post.

“We’re doing what matters for Queensland.”

The proposal was part of the government’s broader strategy to upgrade the Caboolture-Bribie Island Road to four lanes.

The Department of Transport has said the active transport path on the northern side of the new bridge would offer uninterrupted views of the Glass House Mountains.

The existing link was built in 1963 and had only two traffic lanes and a narrow pedestrian pathway.

Part of the plan was to widen Caboolture-Bribie Island Rd to four lanes between Bestmann Rd East and Benabrow Ave, as well as realigning the Sylvan Beach Esp intersection.
