Stadium boost in time for grand final show down

Even more people will be able to watch the Intrust Super Cup grand final live this year – with the host stadium expected to add an extra 3000 seat grandstand in time for September.

The final stage of Dolphin Stadium is expected to be completed in time for the Intrust Super Cup grand final.

The stadium, at Kippa-Ring, north of Brisbane, hosted the grand final last year and is also expected to host it in 2021.

Work is due to start on the upgrades on January 29, following the official sod turning.

The $6.5 million project will include a new 3170 seat grandstand, woman’s change facilities and a second upgraded field behind Dolphin Stadium, new electronic scoreboard and spectator amenities.

Moreton Bay Regional Council has contributed $2.5 million towards the project and the Federal Government $3 million.

Dolphins Chairman Bob Jones said once complete the stadium would be able to hold more than 11,000 spectators.

“The chance to host even more national and international events generates massive exposure for our region through broadcast as well as huge economic benefits from visitor spending,” Mr Jones said.

“Every person travelling from outside the area to watch events at Dolphin Stadium is spending here, whether it’s with accommodation providers, tourism operators or at coffee shops, restaurants and bars.

“It all equals money for our local economy.”

Design and Construction company Paynters, responsible for delivering Stages 1 and 2 of the stadium have been appointed to construct Stage 3.

Paynters plan to engage local trades and suppliers where possible and are expected to create 80-100 jobs including 15-20 apprentices.

Work is expected to be completed in August.
