A Coles spokeswoman said the new staff had came from a wide range of industries, including many forced to close or to stand down staff such as in travel, sport, fitness and hospitality.
Nationally, Coles has recruited more than 7000 people in just two weeks and has opened another 5000 positions across the country.
Roles include serving customers, stocking shelves, delivering online orders and in the in-store bakeries.
“We have seen a lot of demand for roles, and where we have positions available, we are making sure that we can get people into them as quickly as possible,” Coles CEO Steven Cain said.
Domino’s pizza was seeking 2000 new staff across all of its stores to join its network of delivery drivers.
Centrelink has been scrambling to hire 5000 additional workers to help clear the queues which made national headlines last week.
Woolworths meanwhile has created 20,000 new jobs across its network including both casual and short-term contracts.
Roles include checkout assistants, shelf stackers and distribution centre workers.
