A Redcliffe grandfather accused of threatening two men with a machete was denied bail following a tense stand-off with police at Kallangur on Monday, March 22.
The court heard police officers were so alarmed by the alleged behaviour of Scott Damien Forrester, 48, they drew their guns on him and threatened to shoot.
Forrester dropped the machete, allowing officers to arrest him and take him to the Pine Rivers watch house, where he was charged with two counts of going armed as to cause fear and two counts of threatening violence with a machete.
He appeared for a bail application hearing at the Pine Rivers Magistrates Court on Tuesday, where he repeatedly and loudly insisted upon his innocence.
Forrester told Magistrate Melanie Ho he’d gone to the Kallangur property to defend his 27-year-old son, who suffers from significant mental illness, including autism.
“I picked up the machete to show what they attacked my son with,” Forrester told the court.
“Then (the police) drew their guns on me.
“The police were already there when I picked up the machete. Why would I run in and attack someone while police are there?
“I’m not that silly to do that, your honour.”
Lawyer Stephanie Tsimos from KLM Solicitors told the court her client was known to the two male complainants and had attended the Kallangur address when his son called him for assistance.
No further information regarding the alleged attack on Forrester’s son was tendered to the court and no charges have been laid in regards to his claims.
Magistrate Ho noted the police account of what happened that night varied significantly from Forrester’s version.
The police prosecutor objected to the bail application and said the seriousness of the weapon could have led to “significant harm caused”.
The court heard Forrester was on parole at the time of the alleged offences and had prior convictions for assault and drug offences.
Magistrate Ho deemed Forrester to be an unacceptable risk and denied his bail, much to his frustration.
“You’ve just destroyed my family’s life, thank you!” Forrester yelled at the Magistrate.
As the watch-house wardens led him away, Forrester could be heard screaming and violently hitting the walls.
“F--k!”
“F-----g cops!”
He will be remanded in custody until his next appearance on April 20.
