A young mum has faced several charges including one for spitting on a police officer while he was carrying out his duties on Brisbane’s northside.

Savannah Sian Sutton, 26, pleaded guilty to four charges in the Pine Rivers Magistrates Court including serious assault police officer by biting, spitting and serious assault/resist/obstruct public officer while pretending or is armed with a weapon.

The North Lakes woman was supported by her mother and grandparents in court.

The court heard on January 20 last year Sutton assaulted a police officer, spitting in his face.

Court documents stated police believed her to also be carrying a knife at the time of the incident at Griffin.

Police prosecutor Sgt Shannon Bryce said Sutton did not have a relevant criminal history of violence.

“(It can be) safely summated as an aberration of character,” he said.

“However, they are quite serious charges.”

Acting Magistrate Patrick Murphy told the court Sutton’s actions were serious.

“(The) spitting is serious but it’s not the most serious spitting that I’ve seen,” he said.

“Imprisonment is within range for people who spit on police officers.”

Her lawyer told the court Sutton is the sole carer of her six-year-old daughter.

“Ms Sutton tells me that she has plans to commence TAFE and a course in pathology and she hopes to start that next year and move into that line of work,” Mr Jefferies said.

The court heard Sutton had had some changes to her medication about the time of the incident.

“Around the time of this offending which occurred almost 12 months ago now there was some changes to the medication,” her lawyer said.

“Ms Sutton says she “went off the rails” she doesn’t have a clear recollection of these events, but she does understand that her behaviour was unacceptable at the time.

“She feels quite remorseful for her actions.

“She’s quite concerned with the position she’s put herself in today.”

Mr Murphy took into account Sutton’s references that were tendered to the court.

“It seems to me that your mental health has probably played a role in your actions, however you have to take care of your own mental health and deal with that yourself,” he said.

She sentenced Sutton to 12 months’ probation.

No conviction was recorded.
