Residents form action group to stop seven-storey, 136-unit complex on Redcliffe waterfront

RESIDENTS are bracing for a fight to stop a seven-storey bayside high-rise. One says the complex would be a ‘monstrosity’.

WORRIED residents have formed an action group in a bid to stop a seven-storey, 136-unit complex on the waterfront at Redcliffe.

Developers have an application before Moreton Bay Regional Council for the complex, which would include 266 car spaces, at 59-67 Marine Pde. Public consultation is open until June 23.

Nat Vidulich, who has lived next to the 6092sq m block since 2010, said he was not opposed to development, he just did not want one so big.

“It’s a monstrosity,” he said. “The building will come right to my fence, so I’ll be in shade from about 9am. It’s just not workable.”

A spokesman for the developer, Northside Projects, said the proposal was “exciting” and would generate “significant benefits’’ for the area.

He said the company welcomed any feedback as part of the public notification process.

“We will continue to work with council to ensure a positive outcome is achieved for the site,” the spokesman said.

Nearby residents met last week to form an action group to campaign against the current development. The group called on residents to make submissions against it.

The group’s concerns include: increased noise and congestion, the impact on light, wind, privacy, views and property values, and the fact the ground level would be raised.

Dennis Day, who has lived in an apartment on Louis St for three years, said the complex did not suit the area.

“We are not in Surfers Paradise,” he said.

“The overwhelming size of the project will impact on every resident here … the number of proposed units needs to halve.

“If we don’t stop it now, we’ll never stop it and we’ll be stuck with it forever.”

David Dowling, who has lived in an apartment at Louis St for six years, said the residents acknowledged development had to occur on the site but stressed it “needs to blend in without adversely affecting the existing environment and wellbeing of neighbouring residents”.

“The footprint of the building is huge,” he said.

“We are not trying to stop development, but are looking for a win/win.”

A council spokesman said under the Redcliffe City Planning Scheme, the site was located in a medium-density residential zone, which meant the “multiple dwelling development of the scale proposed” would be considered.

“The development application will progress to the decision stage after the conclusion of the public notification period (June 23) ... the proposal will be reported to council for a decision once a council officer assessment has been completed,” he said.

“To date, council has received two submissions.”

Councillor Koliana Winchester (Division Six) has been in contact with residents and will meet with them this week.
