Residents are not happy with a plan to build a 22m high unit complex

Residents are not happy with a developer’s “ridiculous” plan to build a unit complex, almost double the allowed building height, on this waterfront street north of Brisbane.

Residents hope Moreton Bay Regional Council will squash a plan to build a 22m high unit complex at Clontarf just like it stopped the Newport Marina development as it fails to comply with the planning scheme.

I.B. Town Planning lodged the application, on behalf of Lynton Family Trust to build a seven-storey building with 40 units at 12-18 Haysmouth Terrace, Clontarf, earlier this month.

Under the Moreton Bay Regional Council Planning Scheme the maximum building height for that area is 12m.

Long time Peninsula resident Bryan Alker said he was not against development in this area, just not one of this scale.

“The building height (in the area) was previously 8.5m, now it is 12m under the new planning scheme. The (developer) is asking for almost double that which is ridiculous in a residential area,” Mr Alker said.

Residents have banded together to fight the proposal.

Mr Alker said more than 60 people attended a community meeting at the weekend.

He said people were against the development due to potential traffic implications, the height, density and the way it will affect the character of the area.

“Residents are more than welcome to development in that area but it has to be within the guidelines,” Mr Alker said.

The group has already launched a Facebook page against the development and is organising a petition.

Mr Alker said the group had been in contact with the Newport Action Group, who successfully lobbied against Kindred Group’s plan to build a six-storey unit development at the Newport Marina.

The Moreton Bay Regional Council voted against the development, despite council officers recommending it for approval. Councillors said they made this decision as the application did not comply with the planning scheme.
