Construction crews are ready to start work transforming a council chamber north of Brisbane into a new art gallery and community space.

The Redcliffe Council offices, used by Moreton Bay Regional Council, will be repurposed to include a $2 million art gallery and community hub.

The ground floor will be transformed into a modern gallery with over 1000 sqm of floor space for displays, as well as a brand new front counter, courtyard, studio space, storage and curatorial space.

Once the renovations are complete council administration staff will be moved to level one. The council’s chambers will also remain upstairs.

A council spokesman said the major renovation works were due to start next month.

He reminded residents that from February 1 the council customer service desk would be temporarily moved to the Redcliffe Library until September.

Councillor Koliana Winchester (Div 6) said residents would still be able to access the full suite of council services at the library.

“The same friendly staff from the Redcliffe Administration Centre will be ready and waiting to help you from February 1 at a counter in the Redcliffe Library,” she said.

“And anyone requiring a one-on-one meeting with either myself or Councillor Houghton (Div 5) will also be able to do that at the library.

“I apologise for any inconvenience, but looking at the digital simulation the architect has developed to showcase their vision for this renovation I think the outcome will be absolutely worth it.”

Cr Houghton said it would also include additional office space for community groups, with two tenants already excited to move into the renovated building.

“Both the University of Third Age (U3A) and the Redcliffe Seniors Computer Club will be able to deliver classes, workshops and events for members of the public in this amazing new space,” he said.

“By locating these groups, the new gallery and the customer service centre in one building in proximity to the library and cultural centre will bolster the area’s reputation as a hub for community and culture.

“I know how important it is for our senior community to have opportunities to learn more about the arts and technology, and I’m pleased that Council has kept a community focus at the heart of these renovations.”

Moreton Bay Regional Council is yet to announce its plans for the current art gallery, located just up the road from the council building.
