As the sun rises on Thursday, tens of thousands will be standing, heads bowed at Redcliffe’s Anzac Place.

This year’s dawn and midmorning services will focus on those who served in Afghanistan, in particular Operation Slipper.

Redcliffe RSL sub-branch vice president Cheryl Barrett said many of these younger veterans were members of or affiliated with their branch.

There will be a special tribute to the Victoria Cross recipients and the 41 soldiers killed in action during the conflict.

“There are so many beautiful young people who are no longer with us,” Mrs Barrett said.

“It is a chance to acknowledge what they have done for us and how important they are to us.”

Rupert McCall will once again read a poem at the dawn service.
