A Redcliffe mum with an extensive criminal history is back on parole after going on a $700 shopping spree with a stolen credit card.

Emma Lee Maguire, 35, appeared in Redcliffe Magistrates Court on July 16, charged with five offences.

She pleaded guilty to all charges.

The court heard the victim lost her bank card in the Margate area on January 2.

When she reported it lost to the bank she was advised of a number of transactions.

The first occurred at a service station -where Maguire spent $141.54 over three transactions.

She then made five transactions at Redcliffe IGA in 13 minutes spending a total of $408.09.

Maguire then completed three more transactions, totalling $173 at the Redcliffe Leagues Club.

Police Prosecutor Sergeant said police were able to identify Maguire from CCTV footage at each of the shops.

Police found Maguire on January 31.

“When police took up with the defendant she admitted to using the debit card, which she said she had been given by a male, and that she had used it to buy smokes, phone credit, a carton of alcohol and grocery items,” Sgt Bambrick said.

While Maguire was searching for the stolen card in her handbag police spotted a clip seal bag with 0.49 grams of cannabis.

Maguire was further charged with dishonestly gaining $300 for herself on April 27, 2019.

The court heard Maguire, while at the Captain Cook Tavern, at Kippa-Ring, took someone else’s winnings ticket from a pokies machine while the victim was in the bathroom.

CCTV footage showed Maguire approach the machine, reach into the collection tray and cash out the $300.

Magistrate Bucknall ordered Maguire to pay back both victims – a bill totalling more than $1000.

He said Maguire was on probation for a number of stealing and drug charges when she committed the offences in January.

While reading her 10-page history Magistrate Bucknall noted Maguire had been given the benefit of many different sentencing options.

“She kicks off offending in 2002, she is no stranger to the system,” he said.

“She has appeared (with) pretty regular timing since 2002, I can’t see any significant gaps.

“She is just the gift that keeps on giving.”

Maguire’s defence lawyer Dean Mayr asked if Magistrate Bucknall would consider placing his client on a community service order as she was hoping to get back into work.

“Every time they get sentenced it is all positive, they are getting back in the workforce, they are addressing their drug use, they are doing everything but I’m sure that was said 18 years ago when she was first before the court,” Magistrate Bucknall said.

Magistrate Bucknall sentenced Maguire to four months for each of the recent dishonesty charges and drug offence.

She was given an immediate parole release date.

She was convicted and not further punished for the offence committed in April, 2019 as it predated her being placed on probation.
