With its new 11,000 capacity stadium now complete and $100 million backing them up Redcliffe Dolphins are shaping up as favourites to secure the next NRL licence but if they are successful they will no longer be known as the Redcliffe Dolphins.
Dolphins have put two years of planning into its NRL bid – which is finally ready for presentation.
Redcliffe Leagues Club CEO Tony Murphy said he expected the successful licence winner to be announced during the off-season.

“(The NRL) are aiming for a new team in 2023 so they will need to give us at least two seasons to get ready,” Mr Murphy said.
The Redcliffe Dolphins have an impressive 70 plus years of history and have been the launchpad for many league legends.

Mr Murphy said stepping up to the NRL would mean a name change.
He said the Dolphin mascot and name was here to stay but the club would have to drop the Redcliffe from its name if it were to be selected to join the top competition.
Mr Murphy said an official name would be decided down the track but said the aim would be to rebrand with a team name that encompassed the whole Moreton Bay region.
He said a few names had been floated including Moreton Bay Dolphins or the River City Dolphins.

“Brisbane and Moreton Bay both have rivers,” Mr Murphy said.
“It will all be decided down the tracking depending on how the bid goes – it could be just the Dolphins, it has such a strong brand.”
Mr Murphy said the much loved red and white jersey colours would stay – with maybe one extra colour included.
