Redcliffe Dolphins sign Marmin Barba for the 2020 Intrust Super Cup season

Longtime Ipswich Jets player Marmin Barba has joined the Redcliffe Dolphins for the 2020 Intrust Super Cup season. But he is not the first in his family to play for the Peninsula club.

Marmin Barba “can’t wait” to pull on the red and white jersey for the first time next year.

The experienced Intrust Super Cup player has joined the Peninsula side after a lengthy stint with the Ipswich Jets.

Barba, the younger brother of former NRL player Ben Barba and Redcliffe Dolphins premiership player Aaron Barba, said Redcliffe was an easy decision.

“My older brother used to play at Redcliffe, and I just needed a change and a new challenge,” Marmin said.

The 28-year-old debuted with the Jets in 2014 and played every season but 2017, which he missed due to an ankle injury. He scored 10 tries and kicked 41 goals this past season.

Team manager Jon Sloan said Marmin’s brother Aaron was also a “try scoring freak” when he played for the Dolphins, crossing the line for 56 tries in 40 first grade matches.

“He scored five tries in two grand finals for us two against Ipswich in 2002 and three against Burleigh in 2003.” Sloan said.

The winger joined the rest of the Peninsula team at pre-season, which started last week.

Coach Adam Mogg said Marmin and fellow former Jets player Ben Shea were great additions to the side.

“They are both good assets and have been training really hard,” Mogg said. “I’m pretty excited about seeing them in the red and white.”

The training squad is much smaller this year due to the changes in the BRL and new Intrust Super Cup rules.

“The goal at the moment is to just work hard and keep improving,” Mogg said.

The club’s 2018 Premiership captain Cameron Cullen is also on track to play again after missing 2019 with an injury.

“Hopefully he has no more bad luck in charity touch footy games, but he is back and running pretty well. He will be great for us this year,” Mogg said.
