IT has been two years since David Hala played in a trial game for the Brisbane Broncos, making it a special game against the Cowboys on Saturday night.
Adding to the occasion is the home crowd advantage for Hala, who played his junior football at the Redcliffe Dolphins.
"I'm just licking my lips to play in front of all the Redcliffe supporters," he said ahead of the Broncos' first trial game at Redcliffe's Dolphin Oval this weekend.
"Playing in front of your home crowd is a special thing and I'm hoping plenty of Redcliffe fans will be there."
The 24-year-old front rower made his debut for the Broncos in 2009 but his career has been marred by knee and shoulder injuries.
Feeling better than he ever has, the 114kg gentle giant is ready to make his mark in the NRL this year.
"I had a shoulder reconstruction in round 21 or 22."
It has taken a while (to recover) but I'm feeling really good now and back to full contact training," he said.
"I just hope every year that I can be injury-free."
The added pressure of his NRL contract ending at the end of the season is extra motivation for the former Southern Cross student, but not something he lets get to him.
"It is a bit nerve-racking but at the end of the day I just have to play the game I love and hopefully stay injury-free."
"Obviously I want to be playing in the Broncos side but when I'm not, I will playing my best for (affiliates) Redcliffe (in the Intrust Super Cup)."
Still young, the man known as Big Papa is portraying all the same characteristics of a world-class player.
"Petero (Civoniceva) is someone I have always looked up to," he said.
"I base my game around his and try to be a gentleman off the field like he is.
"All I have to do now is learn to play like him."
Civoniceva has big wraps on Hala and will be among the packed crowd at Dolphin Oval to watch Hala make his return for the Broncos. Kick-off is 7.15pm.
Hala will then back up on Sunday morning at Dolphin Oval to conduct a training session with juniors.
Joined by teammates Ben Barba, Marmin Barba, Josh Hoffman and Zach Strasser - who all have connections to Redcliffe - the NRL players will spend an hour signing autographs and doing skill sessions with young fans.
