A court north of Brisbane has heard how a former nail technician from Petrie, who was already on probation, stole food and a birthday card from an IGA, before police found her drug stash.

Selena Christine Stevens, 21, appeared in the Redcliffe Magistrates Court on September 11, charged with fail to take care and precautions in respect of needle and syringe, obstruct police officer, two counts of possessing dangerous drugs, breach of bail and unauthorised dealing with shop goods.

The court heard on August 1, 2023, Stevens stole food and a birthday card from the Deception Bay IGA, valued at $22.40.

Police prosecutor Senior Sergeant David Pollock told the court on 26 August, 2023, patrolling police went to a Joseph Street, Deception Bay address for another matter, where they found Stevens and questioned her in relation to the shoplifting.

“During that arrest she made it difficult for officers by not co-operating with instructions, resisting police when she was taken into custody, attempting to break free from police grip when attempting handcuffing,” Mr Pollock said.

“Inside police found a handbag containing four used syringes, nine clip seal bags, one containing 0.2 grams of methamphetamine.”

Mr Pollock told the court Stevens entered into a bail undertaking the same day at the Redcliffe watchouse, with one condition to report weekly to the Deception Bay Station each Monday, which she failed to do.

Mr Pollock then told the court at a Deception Bay address on August 5, 2023, police found electronic scales and cannabis next to the bed Stevens was sitting on.

Stevens’ lawyer Kerala Drew told the court Stevens grew up in Petrie and completed school to Year 9, before working as a nail technician.

The court also heard Stevens became homeless after the end of a previous relationship.

“Her upbringing was somewhat difficult, her family often lived on the poverty line,” Ms Drew said.

“She isn’t working at present, she currently receives Centrelink, in the form of Jobseeker.

“She knows she needs to stop associating with the people she associated with.

“She now has a stable place to live with her brother.”

The court heard Stevens was already on probation until March 2024 when these offences occurred.

Magistrate Mark Bucknall sentenced Stevens, who pleaded guilty, with a 15 month extension to her existing probation.

Convictions were recorded.
