POLAIR 2 has been named after Brett Forte, the police officer who was shot and killed while on duty last year.
Senior Constable Forte grew up in Redcliffe, attended Clontarf Beach State High School and played hockey for Redcliffe Leagues Club — now the police helicopter tasked with patrolling the Moreton Bay District will bear his name — Brett A Forte.
He was stationed in Caboolture for three years before moving to work with the Toowoomba Tactical Crime Squad.
He was shot and killed on May 29, 2017 while on duty at Toowoomba by an armed offender.
On this day and the next day, Polair 2 provided aerial overview enhancing the situational awareness of the siege incident.
It was the first helicopter to respond to the incident.
Police Minister Mark Ryan and Commissioner Ian Stewart attended the naming ceremony at Highfields, Toowoomba on Friday.
Forte’s children, his wife Susie and other family also attended the event.
Commissioner Stewart said it was a testament to the courage and sacrifice that Senior Constable Brett Forte gave to the service.
“Polair Queensland is an asset to the QPS and it is a great honour that Polair 2 is now named after an officer who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty,” Commissioner Stewart said.
“I would like to acknowledge Brett’s wife Susie and family members today for their ongoing support throughout this naming process.”
Polair 2 provides support to southeast Queensland, from the New South Wales border, to the Moreton District and Ipswich and Toowoomba.
