PLANS for a long-awaited sports complex in the north of Brisbane have been released.

Moreton Bay Regional Council this week announced stage one of the Griffin Sports Complex is slated to be finished over the next two financial years at a cost of $15 million.

Located at Henry and Elizabeth roads in Griffin the 294,382 square metre site will contain 168 car parks, according to council.

A MBRC spokesman said stage one of the project will include irrigated and LED lit sports fields, a clubhouse with an office, first aid and referees rooms, toilets, storage, two change rooms, kitchen/bar, a clubroom and an external storage facility.

Application development plans also detailed undercover breezeway and walkway access, pedestrian access path ways and office and amenity space for staff.

A main structure will be built between the two largest sports fields with a third, smaller field to the east of the site.

The main structure will feature large awnings on its longitudinal sides giving spectators views of the larger sports fields.

Councillor Julie Greer, who announced North Lakes District Kangaroos Rugby League Club had been selected to take up residency at the site, also revealed original plans contained more sports fields.

“By relocating the Kangaroos to their own facility in Griffin, we can alleviate some of the pressure on North Lakes sports venues and free up space and time for other clubs,” she said.

“We originally planned for additional fields on the site, but during the design process culturally significant areas were discovered in some parts of the site.

“We also had to respond to other site constraints, which led us to revise the overall size of this stage of the complex.

“We’ve been able to strike a healthy balance between preserving these important areas and providing for the club’s future needs.”
