Moreton Bay regional Council recently appointed J Mac Constructions to build a $9 million regional park and sports oval at the entrance to the site, opposite the USC Moreton Bay’s university’s foundation building.

In light of recent revelations over land and water contamination at the old Petrie Mill site, a council spokesman said The Oval site had already been “completely decommissioned”.

“I hope that every visit to The Oval feels like an adventure for local kids,” Division 9 councillor Mike Charlton said.

“We’re building a water play zone with tipping buckets, water guns and water-friendly play structures to keep kids busy.

“There’ll also be an adventure zone with two separate playgrounds to challenge teenagers and younger kids alike.

“The junior zone will have swings, climbing structures, a spinner and all-abilities play elements.

“While the senior zone will have a zip line, climbing wall and parkour-style obstacles.”

The Oval will also have sports fields, barbecues, amphitheatre, gathering spaces, picnic seating, gardens, outdoor movie opportunities and more.

“Importantly, we’re going to revegetate the areas to the west, south and east of The Oval using endemic flora species to grow our local ecosystem,” Cr Charlton said.

“Established trees to the west, south and east will be retained and protected and I’m pleased to say no vegetation clearing is proposed as part of these works.”
