A FEDERAL Labor candidate is calling on the community to back her campaign to help slash costs of MRI scans at a busy public hospital north of Brisbane.

Federal Labor candidate for Petrie Corinne Mulholland has launched a petition to help secure a MRI licence for the machine at Redcliffe Hospital.

Earlier this year, in the lead up to the Longman by-election, Labor leader Bill Shorten promised to provide a new Medicare-subsidised MRI licence in the Moreton Bay Region — either at Caboolture or Redcliffe Hospital.

Ms Mulholland said this was separate to that promise.

“Locals deserve world-class hospital services and having an MRI machine at Redcliffe Hospital will help to ensure our community gets timely, affordable access to potentially lifesaving scans which are so vital in early diagnosis and detection of cancer and other diseases,” Ms Mulholland said.

The Department of Health website states there are two companies with the licence, one at Caboolture and one at Redcliffe.

It follows a senate inquiry which found people in Morayfield, Caboolture and Redcliffe had limited access to Medicare MRI scans.
