PENINSULA Power will extend its clubhouse after getting a whopping $451,900 Federal Government Community Sport Infrastructure Grant.

Power president Craig Feuerriegel said everyone at the club was “extremely happy and excited” after Minister for Sport, Senator Bridget McKenzie, visited AJ Kelly Park to make the announcement.

Feuerriegel said the money would be used for an indoor activity building for junior programs, and for senior players — men and women — to train indoors.

“This is a massive boost for our club,” Feuerriegel said, adding he hoped for construction to get underway at the beginning of next year, and all going well, to finish by May.

“We are very lucky to have been given the opportunity to do this.”

Feuerriegel said the upgrades would enhance the club’s ability to get more people involved in physical activity.

“Our club continues to invest in sporting participation for men, women, boys and girls, through our football programs and this announcement will give us more scope to further enhance opportunities into the future,” Feuerriegel said.

“Bring on 2019.”

Federal LNP MP for Petrie Luke Howarth, who was a driving force behind getting the grant, said the new building was necessary as the club moved up the ranks in the football sphere.

Howarth said the club excelled because they were “a strong united club — very tight knit”.

“They obviously had a fantastic 2018 season,” Howarth said, adding 70 per cent of the club’s teams made finals.

Howarth, who sponsored Power’s under-21 team this year, said he looked forward to watching the top men’s team, who were undefeated in the Football Queensland Premier League, in the National Premier Leagues competition next year, and Power’s women excel on the field in the new look Brisbane Women’s Premier League.

McKenzie said “sporting clubs like Peninsula Power are so often at the heart of communities and the Coalition Government sees this infrastructure program as a valuable investment in building community spirit and pride”.

“Sporting facilities not only provide great spaces for physical activity, supporting health and wellbeing, but many facilities also serve as a hub for broader community activity,” McKenzie said

“They bring together people from all walks of life and provide a gathering place for a range of community sporting events.”
