New ‘super’ dog-friendly cafe opens along Redcliffe waterfront

A Margate couple has taken the plunge and opened their second business, a dog-friendly cafe by the water and have so far received overwhelming feedback.

New Margate cafe opens on waterfront

Margate couple Aimee and Glenn Douglas saw a gap in the market and a seaside location as signs to pull the trigger and open their own cafe.

Indigo’s Cafe at 3/139 Margate Pde is the only coffee shop for some distance between Redcliffe and Woody Point, easily accessible for the Margate community and beachgoers in the area to enjoy.

Tucked behind the Seafood Lovers Cafe, Mrs Douglas said the coffee beans supplied by Allpress makes for a delicious cuppa, along with a strong focus on food and cold drinks.

“We thought it was an ideal spot, we love the view and presumed a lot of other people would to,” Mrs Douglas said.

“Between Redcliffe and Woody Point on the beachfront there is no actual coffee shop.

“There’s just a couple of businesses doing other types of foods.

“We are a bit tucked away and we’ve had lots and lots of people within a four street radius coming in for a coffee and something to eat.

“They were crying out for it.”

Dogs are very welcome as well, with a bowl of water and free jar of treats available for man’s best friend.

“We’ve been busier than what I thought we would be apart from the weather over the weekend, it wasn’t great on our second weekend,” Mrs Douglas said.

“So far getting a lot of great feedback on the food.

“I did put a post up on the local Facebook group and the support has been really overwhelming, nothing but positivity.

“It blew me away how much support from the community, people we don’t know have pitched at us

“We’re getting lots of dog visitors which is great.”

It took the Douglas’ only a couple of months preparation and just over a week to fit out the cafe and they have made a concerted effort to give youth’s their first jobs.

“It’s great to give kids their first job and we’re committed to providing them training and giving them a sense of autonomy in the workplace and increase their confidence,” Mrs Douglas said.

The Douglas’ also have owned Backyard Features for six years, specialising in selling and installing backyard features like cubby houses, Bali huts, sheds and water features.

“It took a hit during Covid-19 and we’ve really suffered over the last couple of years with the increased supply of raw materials,” Mrs Douglas said.

“We’re keeping it and we have downsized it to a manageable and profitable degree but it’s not enough to support our whole family.

“And I don’t think the four kids are leaving home anytime soon

“We want to be able to be there for them, which owning your own business means you can be.”

Indigo’s Cafe is open weekdays 6am-2pm and weekends 6am-4pm.
