More than 100,000 trees will be planted at the proposed Griffin Sports Complex and adjoining environmental reserve.

Moreton Bay Regional Council has allocated $50,000 to begin detailed design works for the 92.2ha Griffin Sports Complex and environmental reserve in the 2017-18 Budget.

Cr Julie Greer (Div. 4) said more than 50ha of the site would be dedicated as environmental reserve. “The dedicated green space will link with existing environmental reserves and wetlands along Hays Inlet,” she said.

The sporting facilities will be built on the higher parts of the site and infrastructure such as clubhouses would be located above the floodplain.

“Council undertook extensive stormwater management studies as part of developing a master plan for the site.

“All works will be undertaken to ensure they do not cause increased flood levels on other properties,” Cr Greer said.

The site is bound by Elizabeth Rd to the north, Dohles Rocks Rd to the south, Henry Rd to the west and tidally affected private land, residential development and wetlands to the east and south.

The master plan for the sports complex divides the area in western, eastern and southern precincts.

Fields, cricket pitches, clubhouses, cycle and walking tracks, car parking and picnic and barbecue facilities are proposed for the western and eastern precincts.

The southern precinct forms the reserve.

It will feature passive recreation facilities to support environmentally sensitive areas including picnic tables, shelters, barbecues, open grass areas, seating and pedestrian and cycle pathways.

Stage 1 construction is planned to begin in 2019/20.
