Mad Monday celebrations took a sinister turn for a Kallangur rugby player, who laughed as he masturbated in front of a mother pushing her pram on a bike path.
Micaiah Leota, 21, of Kallangur faced Redcliffe Magistrates Court on January 9, charged with wilfully performing an indecent act in public.
The court heard that on November 26, 2022, at 6.55am, a mother pushing her pram with her five-month-old child on the Moreton Bay Rail Cycleway at Mango Hill, felt uneasy when she saw Leota riding towards her on a bike.
Police prosecutor Sheree Wild said the mother then turned around and attempted to walk the other way but Leota kept riding and hopped off his bike to walk alongside her.
“She noticed something in his hands and looked down and observed the male holding his erect penis and masturbating,” Ms Wild said.
“The male person (Leota) continued to masturbate, staring at her and smiling.
“The victim has said ‘what the f**k’ to the male (Leota), laughing.
“The victim has then attempted to contact her husband.”
Leota then got on his bike and rode away but the mother took a photo of him, with police obtaining CCTV footage.
On December 14 police executed a search warrant at Leota’s address, locating and charging the 21-year-old.
Leota’s lawyer Jackson Freeman said Leota was highly remorseful for his actions and came before the court with no criminal history.
“He’d been out drinking all day as part of the Mad Monday festivities for his Petrie rugby team,” Mr Freeman said.
“I’ve dealt with a fair amount of this type of offending and seldom do we so a 21-year-old man coming to this court with no history.”
In handing down his sentence, Magistrate Paul Byrne said the mother would’ve been very distressed by Leota’s actions.
Leota pleaded guilty and was placed on a six month probation order.
No convictions were recorded.
