SUPPORTERS of a drop-in centre for the homeless are frustrated their pleas for land or a building have so far come to nothing.

The Club 189 steering committee held a forum on March 9, to further develop ideas and strengthen links with other community groups.

It was held in the same week as the third Rockin 4 the Homeless event, which raised more than $20,000.

More than $65,000 has been raised in total.

Club 189 spokeswoman Ros Thomsen said 35-40 people attended the forum .

Ms Thomsen said Club 189 had been in discussions with the council and other community groups about sharing space to no avail.

“It hinges on land or a building,” Ms Thomsen said.

“I would have thought after three events, we could go and do it somewhere.”

The Herald asked all six mayoral candidates if they would help the group find a base and if they thought the service was needed.

Dean Teasdale said he would establish a Moreton Bay Regional Community Forum to establish priorities and co-ordinate efforts.

He said the council needed to take up its share of responsibility.

John McNaught said he would champion the cause with the federal and state governments.

Barry Bolton said he would help the group find a base as it was the council’s role to help “all parts of our community, especially those who are disadvantaged”.

Jason Woodforth said he would help the group find a site as long as there was no other group providing the same service.

Allan Sutherland said he supported Club 189’s work but demand for council facilities was high.

He said as they became available, the group could make an application.

Shayne Hogan said council should help secure land for the “much-needed” service.

“It is important to get these much-needed services throughout the region as the homeless population is growing,” he said.
