THE Federal Government has set aside $20 million to upgrade one of the Bribie region’s worst roads.

Federal LNP candidate for Longman Trevor Ruthenberg said the planned upgrade, announced today, would ease congestion on Bribie Island Rd.

“I have doorknocked thousands of homes in the electorate and upgrading Bribie Island Rd is always a key issue,” he said.

It will include adding an extra lane from Saints Rd to Hickey Rd, including the Old Toorbul Point Rd intersection.

Money will also go towards installing new traffic signals at Kal Ma Kuta and Bestmann roads in a bid to make the intersection safer.

A LNP spokesman said the project was not dependant on Mr Ruthenberg winning the upcoming Longman by-election.

The spokesman said they would have to liaise with the state government before construction could start.

He said the aim was to complete the works with minimal disruptions to motorists.

State LNP MP for Pumicestone Simone Wilson said she would advocate for the State Government to ensure the “dangerous” Old Toorbul Point Rd intersection upgrade was a priority.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said upgrade complemented the government’s $10 billion commitment to the Bruce Highway Upgrade Program, including the additional $3.3 billion announced in the 2018-19 Budget.

“The Bruce Highway Upgrade Program also includes $1.42 billion committed to upgrade the Pine River to Caloundra corridor, which intersects with Bribie Island Road and is the main road to Brisbane,” Mr Turnbull said.

The information provided by the LNP was under embargo at the time of print.

Bribie Weekly was unable to seek comment from other candidates for this week’s edition.

Candidate nominations for the Longman by-election, which is on July 28 closed today.

Polling booth locations were yet to be announced at the time of print.
