Levi May and Kayla Mateer jailed for Woodford prison drug deal

Two young detainees at a prison north of Brisbane have been sentenced to further jail terms after one supplied the other with ice and prescription opioids.

Two young detainees at a prison north of Brisbane, one a serial fraudster, the other a budding criminal who once tried to swallow a bag of meth to keep it from watch-house officers, have been sentenced to further terms of custody for a behind-bars drug deal.

Moffat Beach woman Kayla Rose Mateer and Lawnton man Levi Robert May, both 21, each pleaded guilty in Brisbane Supreme Court on Friday to two counts of aggravated drug supply in a correctional facility.

Both offences occurred on March 8 this year within Woodford Correctional Centre.

At the time, Mateer was remanded in pre-sentence custody for unrelated charges, while May had been serving out an existing sentence for offending while on parole.

The court heard Mateer was discovered by prison authorities “trying to supply” May with 0.219g of methamphetamine and 83 buprenorphine strips — prescription opioids used to treat drug addiction.

Three days after the deal was busted, May said he had recruited Mateer to bring the drugs into the prison for him to on-supply to other detainees, the court heard.

May was thrown back into prison on January 15 this year, serving out an existing sentence due to expire on July 15, 2022.

The court heard he had an appalling criminal history, which the Crown prosecutor said at his count numbered 75 offences committed in the space of 27 months.

He had previously supplied drugs to teenage children and smashed his way into a pharmacy in company with two others to raid prescription drugs to feed his own raging addiction.

He also swallowed a bag of meth in a watch-house while smuggling shortened syringes inside his body.

The Crown submitted this history showed the extent of May’s addiction to substances including cocaine, ice, cannabis and prescription opioids.

The court heard Mateer had 32 fraud convictions for flogging dodgy concert tickets online over a four-and-a-half month period, receiving a suspended sentence, fine and an order of restitution to her victims.

May was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment, with immediate eligibility for parole, while Mateer was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment with the same eligibility.
