Students at elite Brisbane school have 'jumped ' onto the 'new furries trend'

Parents from a popular school just north of Brisbane have spoken out alleging more than 10 high school students had their iPads, phones, and wallets stolen during a school assembly.

According to local parents, more than 10 students from Murrumba State Secondary College had their personal iPads, phones, wallets, and school bags stolen during a school assembly on Monday, March 21, 2022.

Parent Mo’ana Maria took to a public social media group to share what had happened to her child.

“A bunch of kids at Murrumba state high school had their iPads, phone and wallets stolen whilst in assembly,” she said.

“I‘m talking over ten plus.

“That’s a huge chunk of money stolen. Someone knows something.”

She said the devices were sending location signals that showed them to still be on school property some time after the thefts.

“The items were still in the school 35 mins later and haven’t left that location.”

Ms Maria said she had called the school office and was told police had been contacted.

“I called the office and got my daughter to run down to show them where it was showing the location,” she said.

“They looked through the classrooms but they can’t legally go through the bags.

“My daughter has a beeper that goes off. It was either too quiet for them to hear or volume had been turned right down.

“My daughter said no one was around and the class rooms were empty.

“I’m so mad about it. She only lost her iPad, but others lost so much more. I was glad she kept her phone on her.”

Another parent said their son’s bag went missing on the same day at Murrumba State High School. His iPad was also in his bag at the time.

“I have had a conversation with the dean of what year my child is in and I am currently awaiting to hear back from what the school is yet to do about it as I’m overseas at the moment dealing with family matters,” they said.

“As far as I am aware other parents are also in the same situation and trying to locate and deal with the missing bags.”

Police have confirmed they are investigating the incident and working with the school.

The Department of Education has also released a statement.

“The department is aware a number of items have allegedly been taken from students’ bags at Murrumba State Secondary College,” a spokesperson said.

“The Queensland Police Service has been contacted and the department will continue to work closely with them as investigations continue.

“The school is also encouraging parents and carers of affected students to contact police with details of any missing items via Policelink, 131444.

“Schools are amongst our most precious community assets and we all have a role to play in keeping them safe.

“As part of the School Watch program we ask all communities to report any suspicious activities by calling the police or School Watch on 13 17 88.”
