A massive 25-hectare park, complete with a scooter track, basketball court and riverside barbecues, is set to open in one of the state’s fastest growing regions north of Brisbane this year.

Moreton Bay Regional Council approved the first phase of the $6 million green space, with work due to start in April.

Riverbank Parklands will span 1.5km along the Caboolture River, which will be home to cycling tracks, a shaded adventure playground, a basketball half-court, hopscotch, scooter track, picnic facilities and an oval with football posts.

While showcasing extensive planted and natural landscaped areas with river views, the Riverbank Parklands will also offer public carparking spaces and an amenities block.

The park has been in the planning stages with the Moreton Bay Council for more than three years.

Mayor Peter Flannery said the council would spend $2 million on the first stage of the parkland, with money from infrastructure charges and the council’s $743 million budget.

“A scalding metal slide and a bench doesn’t cut the mustard anymore. Families want open space that enhances the local environment, provides quality equipment and connects to community hubs without having to hop in the car,” Cr Flannery said.

“As a council, we recently announced another 100 hectares for green space in growing areas, and this announcement just adds to the growing list of parks, conservation areas and national parks in Moreton Bay.”

Developer Peet Limited managing director and CEO Brendan Gore said the parkland would ensure residents in the massive Peet estate would have access to beautiful river settings and open space.

“The Parklands will further bring into focus the long-term vision for Riverbank – a community with the conveniences of an urban location with the benefits of nature,” Mr Gore said.

Division 3 Councillor Adam Hain said the project would also fill an important missing link between homes in the area.

“We’re watching Caboolture transform into a place that celebrates its environment and getting outdoors, encourages more sustainable modes of transport, and most importantly is a connected community,” Cr Hain said.

Riverbank is a Peet Limited residential community nestled in Caboolture South, halfway between the beaches of the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane’s CBD and is a five-minute drive to the Bruce Highway.
