Gavin Causer: Football player charged over DV assaults

A star signing of the Beerwah Bulldogs and once celebrated Brighton Roosters player will remain in jail as he awaits a court date for a string of shocking domestic assaults.

A Brisbane football star will sit in jail awaiting a court date for a string of shocking domestic assaults.

Gavin Scott Causer, 29, appeared under police guard in Pine Rivers Magistrates Court this morning as he was committed to stand trial in Brisbane District Court.

Mr Causer — who had a celebrated rugby league career which most recently included signing as fullback for the Beerwah Bulldogs in May 2020 — faces appalling domestic violence charges including causing grievous bodily harm, five counts of assault occasioning bodily harm and choking.

In total, the young North Lakes dad faces 58 charges, nine of which will be dealt with by the district court.

It will be alleged the grievous bodily harm offence happened at Ocean View, north west of Brisbane, on August 30 last year while the bulk of the other charges committed to the higher court happened on May 6 at North Lakes.

When asked by Magistrate Trevor Morgan if he had anything to say in response to the charges Mr Causer replied “no thank you, your honour”.

Mr Causer did, however, plead guilty to one count of driving without a licence (repeat offender).

The court heard he was intercepted by police who realised he had never held a licence despite driving to his friend’s house.

Mr Causer was remanded in custody ahead of the district court hearing, while the remaining charges were adjourned to October 26.

The jail time has halted the fullback’s football career, which included time at West Brisbane Panthers before being picked up by the Bulldogs.

At the time of the singing the Bulldogs said they hoped the “exciting” fullback would “light up the competition in the number 1 jersey and bring quality X-factor to what’s a strong Beerwah backline”.

Causer had also been an award-winning utility back for the Brighton Roosters Junior Rugby League Club.
