Pine Rivers Crime Prevention Unit Sergeant Sharnelle Harris said any home security measure was better than nothing.

“Cameras can definitely work as an effective intelligence tool for us,” she said.

“However, when installing cameras users really need to see what the footage looks like at night, in action.

“If the footage is no good, it is useless to us.”

Sgt Harris was quick to warn cameras are not a foolproof measure.

“People should remember that if an offender is motivated enough they will proceed with the crime regardless,” she said.

“But again, whatever you can afford is better than nothing.”

Security expert and CEO of Secure Your World, Scott Cairns, said cameras offered numerous advantages.

“Motion sensor security cameras are the best thing you can install around the home or your business to prevent break-ins,” he said.

“They need to be installed in obvious places so thieves can see them and they should cover all of the key entry points into the property.

“My advice is put them around the outside of the property and inside the property.

“Security cameras are definitely a deterrent; not only do they reduce the incidence of break-ins, they also help to reduce the cost of your home insurance bills.

“Many insurers will discount premiums if security cameras are installed.”

There was a general consensus on social media that 4K quality, cordless setups provided the best flexibility — especially for renters.
