A busy southeast Queensland hospital will have a multistorey carpark by the end of 2019 if everything goes according to plan.

The carpark is being built at Redcliffe Hospital, north of Brisbane.

State Labor MP for Redcliffe Yvette D’Ath announced the State Government would fund the project in August last year.

Metro North Health Services director of infrastructure, planning and capital projects David Walker discussed the project’s progress at a public consultation on Thursday.

At this stage, the carpark, which will include about 600 spaces, will be built at the corner of Recreation St and Anzac Ave. It will include a mix of staff, public and disabled spaces.

It will cost up to $15 a day for people to park at the hospital, including in spaces not in the multistorey carpark.

Mr Walker said the proposed number of parking spaces had been calculated based on expected use.

He said drones were used to monitor parking in and around the hospital from 6am to 6pm. The research found that current spaces were 100 per cent full by 9am and started to become free after 3pm.

There is the capacity to add another three storeys to the carpark when the need arises.

Mr Walker said the carpark would not be run by a private company. Tariffs collected will be used by Metro North Health Services to pay off the loan for the building.

He said he was still working with the State Government to determine what the profits would be used for once the loan was paid off.

“Obviously we want the money to come back to Metro North, to be invested back into the hospital,” Mr Walker said.

The carpark will use numberplate recognition technology to monitor the carpark and there will be signs informing people where empty spaces are.

Construction is expected to start in October.

The number of parks at the hospital will be reduced during construction, which is expected to take 10 to 12 months.

Redcliffe Harness Racing president Bernie Ring said people would be able to park at the paceway during construction for a gold coin donation.

The Redcliffe Uniting Church also offered to allow people to park on the vacant block next to the church.

About 40 people attended the consultation session on Thursday. They raised concerns about the number of disability parks, lighting, covered walkways, loss of trees, parking costs and traffic congestion in surrounding streets.
